Former Virginia Tech wrestler Devin Carter is joining the Hokies' coaching staff, head coach Tony Robie announced Thursday afternoon. Carter will serve as a volunteer assistant coach while he finishes up his PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. "We're excited that Devin's schedule will allow him to be in the room to help our team for the remainder of this season," Robie said. "His presence and the intensity that he brings to practice every day will be a huge benefit to our guys. Devin is without a doubt one of the toughest people that I've coached over the past two decades and we are fortunate to have him on staff." The Christiansburg native wrestled for the Blue Demons before beginning his college career at Virginia Tech. During his time with the Hokies, he became one of the program's all-time greats. In his four years on the team, Carter was a four-time ACC champion, three-time All-American and became the Hokies' first national finalist when he reached the championship match at 141 pounds in 2014. He owns the Virginia Tech record in NCAA Championship wins with 19, while winning 121 total matches in his career. His all-time winning percentage of .883 is another school record as he finished his career with a record of 121-16. Carter will stick around the program through the end of the season. The Hokies return to action this weekend when they will participate in the Virginia Duals in Hampton.
