Virginia Tech guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker is having a breakout season, leading the team with 17.8 points per game. He’s starting to get recognition for his play, earning a spot on the John R. Wooden Award watch list. Alexander-Walker joins 24 other players on the watch list for the Wooden Award, which honors the top player in Division I basketball each season. He is one of seven players to join the watch list midseason and is now one of five ACC players on the list. In addition to being named to the Wooden Award watch list, Alexander-Walker was named to the watch list for the Lute Olson Award, which also recognizes the top Division I basketball player each season. The watch list consists of 30 total players, and Alexander-Walker is one of six ACC players to be recognized. Alexander-Walker’s play is not just leading the Hokies; he is near the top of the ACC in several statistics. The sophomore from Toronto is fifth in the league in points per game, tied for second in steals and 10th in field goal percentage. Both awards will be announced in April. The Lute Olson award will be presented in Minneapolis at the site of the NCAA Division I championship. The Wooden Award winner will be announced at the ESPN College Basketball Awards on April 12.
