Just over a week after the college football season ended, anticipation is already building for next season. The ACC announced its 2019 schedule on Wednesday afternoon, and Virginia Tech fans can start marking their calendars for next fall.
Virginia Tech will have seven home games for the second consecutive season. The schedule also features two Friday games, one at home and one on the road.
“We are excited to once again have seven home games at Lane Stadium in 2019,” head coach Justin Fuente said. “Opening the season on the road at Boston College will be a challenge, but I know our squad will embrace the opportunity. I know how much our team appreciates the support of our fans wherever we play. We look forward to seeing Hokie Nation out in force in Blacksburg and on the road in 2019.”
The Hokies will open the 2019 season with a road game at Boston College on Aug. 31. This will mark the first time that Tech has opened back-to-back seasons against ACC opponents since the 1987-1988 seasons, when it played Clemson in both years. The game against Boston College will also be the first time Tech has played in August since the 2014 season, when William and Mary visited Lane Stadium on Aug. 30. After the road trip to Chestnut Hill, Tech will return to Blacksburg for a three-game homestand. The Hokies open their home schedule with Old Dominion on Sept. 7 followed by Furman on Sept. 14. They’ll have an open week before playing Duke in their ACC home opener on Sept. 27. Following the Duke game, Tech will travel to Miami on Oct. 5 to take on the Hurricanes. This will be the earliest matchup between the former Big East rivals since the 2009 season, when they played on Sept. 26. Tech returns home after Miami for a two-game stretch, hosting its second FCS opponent Rhode Island on Oct. 12 and North Carolina on Oct. 19. The Hokies will visit Notre Dame for just the second time ever on Nov. 2. Tech won the first visit to South Bend in 2016 in a 34-31 comeback victory. Wake Forest comes to Lane Stadium on Nov. 9 for the first time since 2010, when the Hokies won 52-21. Tech will travel to Atlanta on Nov. 16 to play Georgia Tech and return home for its final home game on Nov. 23 when Pitt comes to town. The game against Pitt will serve as Virginia Tech’s senior day for the 2019 season. The Hokies conclude their 2019 schedule on Black Friday, Nov. 29, when they visit Virginia in Charlottesville. Tech will look to extend its Commonwealth Cup winning streak to 16 seasons in the game against the Cavaliers. While the schedule overall lacks any standout marquee games, an easier 2019 season is just what the Hokies need while trying to rebuild after 2018. With the state of the Coastal Division, Virginia Tech has a realistic shot to make it back to the ACC Championship game in 2019. For Hokies fans who can’t wait until August to see the team in action, the spring game is scheduled for April 13 in Lane Stadium and should be enough to tide fans over until the fall.Photo Credit: Harley Taylor
