Virginia Tech Makes Top Five For OLB Eugene Asante

IMG 4475
Top 2019 OLB Eugene Asante has announced his top 5 schools, and Virginia Tech made the cut. In no particular order, the other 4 schools that Asante is considering are Florida State, North Carolina, Nebraska, and Maryland. https://twitter.com/sectorocho/status/1090779302101245952?s=19 When the Hokies offered Asante in December, he was still flying under the radar. Since then, his recruited has taken a giant leap. Matej Sis of 247 Sports reports that Asante has moved up 1,957 spots in 247 Sports' overall rankings since he received that Virginia Tech offer. Now, Asante is listed as a four star recruit. 247 Sports currently lists him as the 178th ranked overall prospect for 2019 and the 5th ranked player in Virginia. The Hokies hosted Asante on an official visit the weekend before Early Signing Day. According to 247 Sports, UCLA and Florida State have also hosted Asante on official visits this month with the four-star LB set to take an official to North Carolina this weekend. As a student of Westfield High School in Chantily, VA, he has in-state ties that should benefit the Hokies. Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster has been his primary recruiter thus far. Backeris also a position that the Hokies are looking to fill in this class. Currently, the only likely OLB commit that Virginia Tech has for 2019 is JUCO transfer Amare Barno, who signed in December, though he may also end up at DE. It is still unclear whether fellow 2019 signee Dean Ferguson will end up at whip linebacker/nickelback, which seems more likely, or backer at this point. In any case, Asante would be a major addition to the linebacker corps. For a Hokies team that already signed most of their 2019 recruits during the early signing period, Asante is the biggest remaining defensive target for the Hokies with our recruiting board having a prediction in the Hokies' favor.
