A big week keeps getting better for Virginia Tech’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker. After winning ACC Player of the Week on Monday, the Hokies’ sophomore guard has been named to watch lists for both the Wooden Award and the Jerry West Award.
Alexander-Walker was included as one of 20 players on the Wooden Award late-season watch list. He joins fellow ACC players RJ Barrett, Kyle Guy, De’Andre Hunter and Zion Williamson on the list.
The Wooden Award is presented annually to the best basketball player at the NCAA Division I level. The winner of the 2019 award will be announced during the ESPN College Basketball Awards on April 12, 2019.
Alexander-Walker joins nine other players as finalists for the Jerry West Award, which is given out to the nation’s best shooting guard each year. The award is named for West Virginia University and Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West, who led West Virginia to national prominence during his collegiate career.
Three other ACC players join Alexander-Walker on the list. RJ Barrett, Kyle Guy and Tyus Battle were all named as finalists as well.
Alexander-Walker, a 6-foot-5 guard from Toronto, is having a standout season for the Hokies. He currently leads the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game. He set a season-high in points last week, scoring 25 against Miami on his way to winning his second conference player of the week honor.
Fellow Hokie Justin Robinson has received recognition for his season as well, being named as a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award. The award recognizes the top point guard in Division I basketball. Robinson was removed from the list after news of his injury came out last week. Boston College’s Ky Bowman has taken his place as a finalist.
Alexander-Walker will lead the Hokies when they return to action Saturday afternoon at Clemson.
