2020 ATH Joseph Johnson III Receives Virginia Tech Offer

Entrance 1
Grant Atkinson
Life Christian Academy ATH Joseph Johnson III took an unofficial visit to Blacksburg this weekend and immediately afterwards, he received the news he had been waiting for: an official scholarship offer from Virginia Tech. https://twitter.com/joseph_johnson7/status/1094746661438570496?s=19 "When I left the school, Coach Zohn [Burden] texted my coach and said, 'Tell Joseph Johnson to call me tomorrow," Johnson said. "Then he hit my coach up and said it was official and that I have the offer." For Johnson, this was an offer he had been waiting for since he was very young. As a resident of South Chesterfield, VA, he said he has been watching the Hokies for a long time. "It was a dream come true," said Johnson of the offer. "I was a big fan as a kid and still am." Johnson said he enjoyed getting to see the Virginia Tech campus and meet the coaches on his visit. In particular, he said he enjoyed getting to know cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell, since Johnson says the Hokies are recruiting him primarily at defensive back. "When Coach Mitchell took us in a room and went over film...it really impressed me," he said. "I liked the way he was teaching." Besides just business, Johnson also said he got to enjoy himself by shooting some hoops in the gym and touring the President's Suite. Virginia Tech was the first Power 5 offer for Johnson. However, just hours after Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh extended an offer as well which appears to be in part due to the attention his VT offer has now caused many other programs to give him. "I would say a lot. Right after I posted my offer, I received an offer from Pitt and a bunch of schools have hit me up for visits and are texting me," Johnson said about the impact this offer has had on his recruitment. As of right now, though, the Hokies are in a good position. "[Virginia Tech] is definitely at the top, but I'm going to wait and see what else comes," Johnson told us. "I feel like in these next couple of months I will make my decision."
