Virginia Tech Makes the Final 6 for Four-Star C Tre Mitchell

VT Cheerleaders Clemson 1
Virginia Tech basketball has built a strong 2019 class with four-star PG/SG Anthony Harris, four-star SF/PF Emanuel Miller, three-star SF/PF Yavuz Gultekin, and three-star PG Andre Gordon. Despite having four signees, the Hokies still have their eyes on trying to add a true big man with four-star C Tre Mitchell being the top target. Earlier this week, Mitchell released his final 6 schools with Virginia Tech making the cut. https://twitter.com/tre_mitch33/status/1105634751698874373 In addition to the Hokies; Syracuse, Indiana, Georgia Tech, Providence, and Massachusetts made the cut for Mitchell. At this point, it's unclear what schools Mitchell will take his 3 remaining official visits (per 247 Sports), but with none of the 6 having hosted Mitchell yet on an official, it will be critical for all 6 to get him on campus for one. With Kerry Blackshear set to be a senior, it is critical for the Hokies to add at least one big man who isn't a one-year grad transfer whether that's via the traditional high school route or a transfer. What's also clear is that Mitchell is by far the number 1 target for Virginia Tech with the Hokies making the regional big man a priority. If Mitchell ended up in Blacksburg, he would be in an interesting situation with a chance to be Kerry Blackshear's backup and learn for a season before likely being pushed into a starting role as a sophomore, something that could prove very beneficial for him. Additionally, Mitchell would fit the role as a true center surrounding the four-guard/wing style that Buzz Williams has gone with a lot, allowing an undersized guy like PJ Horne to work more as a four as well. Virginia Tech is in the hunt for Tre Mitchell as they look to make one of the East Coast's best centers their fifth high school addition in a strong 2019 class.

Tre Mitchell in the Recruiting Rankings

In the 2019 class, Mitchell is ranked 72nd best by Rivals, 73rd best by ESPN, 81st best by the 247 Sports Composite, and 105th best by 247 Sports. Among centers, Mitchell is ranked 17th best by Rivals, 18th best by ESPN, 21st best by the 247 Sports Composite, and 26th best by 247 Sports.
