Virginia Tech's Ty Outlaw Will Play Against Duke

Ty Outlaw 1 1
Virginia Tech senior guard Ty Outlaw was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana in Montgomery County, leaving his status for the rest of the NCAA Tournament uncertain. Head coach Buzz Williams provided some clarity on the situation Thursday morning, announcing in a statement that Outlaw will play in Virginia Tech's game against Duke on Friday night. "After discussion with out Director of Athletics Whit Babcock and our athletics administration in accordance with our policies and procedures, we are following our departmental protocol involving misdemeanors." Virginia Tech policy does not dictate any certain consequence when an athlete is charged with a misdemeanor. The Hokies basketball team was in San Jose on the date of the offense. Local authorities searched his apartment after obtaining a warrant, and found marijuana inside the apartment. Despite Outlaw's absence at the time, police still charged him with the misdemeanor. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 11, after the NCAA Tournament has already concluded. After passing the drug test, Williams and the rest of the athletics administration have determined that Outlaw will be eligible to play in the NCAA Tournament game on Friday. "With that information in mind we intend to play Ty on Friday evening," Williams said. "We will continue to let the process play out and that's all I can say at this time. If information changes we will respond appropriately according to our policies." For the 2018-19 season, Ty Outlaw is averaging 8.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while shooting 45.5% from the field and 45.6% from three-point range. In the first 2 rounds of the NCAA Tournament, Outlaw opened with 7 points and 7 rebounds against Saint Louis followed by a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds against Liberty. Virginia Tech tips off against Duke at an estimated time of 9:39 p.m. on Friday night in Washington, D.C on CBS.
