Virginia Tech Football Recruiting Notes 4/3/19

Gary Smith 1 Jan 2019
Virginia Tech football has been busy on the recruiting trail recently hosting lots of top targets with more talented recruits set to visit in the coming days. Additionally, the Hokies made the cuts for a pair of top targets including one of their top 2020 defensive line targets. With that said, here's the latest from the Hokies on the recruiting trail.

Virginia Tech Makes the Top 7 for Four-Star DL Coziah Izzard

The Hokies have made Coziah Izzard a priority and have been one of the top contenders in his recruitment for at least several months. Unsurprisingly, the Hokies were among Izzard's recent top 7. https://twitter.com/Co_Izzard/status/1112833630093627393 Virginia Tech, Penn State, and Maryland have all been major contenders in his recruitment and previously talked up as schools high on his radar while Notre Dame seems like a team to keep an eye on along with Alabama though it remains to be seen how much interest the Crimson Tide have. Izzard did visit Virginia Tech earlier in 2019 for the Hokies' first Junior Day with VT likely to push hard to get him on campus at least once this spring. At this point, it seems unlikely that Izzard will make a decision before the summer with a very realistic chance that his recruitment goes into the fall and the heart of official visit season. For the Hokies, they have a lot of work ahead in order to add one of their top defensive line targets to their 2020 class.

Three-Star DT Gary Smith Will Visit Virginia Tech for Spring Game

Three-star DT Gary Smith, one of Virginia Tech's top interior defensive line targets, recently told us that he plans to visit Blacksburg for the Hokies' Spring Game on April 13th. Smith's Spring Game visit will be his second to Blacksburg this year after he previously visited Virginia Tech for the Hokies' first Junior Day of the year in January. Since that visit days after his offer, Virginia Tech has continued to make Smith a priority at DT with the three-star DT taking notice of the Hokies' interest in him. Smith told us that Virginia Tech and in-state Vanderbilt are the two schools currently recruiting him the hardest. Additionally, Smith told us that he has built a strong relationship with DL coach Charley Wiles and that he has regular communication with him. When Smith visits next weekend, he already knows what he's hoping to see the most. "I want to see the excitement from the fans that everybody raves about."

Virginia Tech Set to Host a Pair of 2021 Offensive Targets

The Hokies are set to host a pair of 2021 targets as WR Ahmari Huggins and TE Cane Berrong both tweeted out yesterday that they will be visiting Blacksburg in the coming days. https://twitter.com/ahmari_huggins/status/1113274815484440577 https://twitter.com/CaneBerrong/status/1113083542903324672 Berrong will be on campus Friday while Huggins will be visiting sometime this weekend, likely on Saturday with VT's spring practice schedule aligning better for a Saturday visit. Huggins appears to be a high priority at wide receiver for the Hokies in the 2021 class after VT became Huggins' first offer this past September. Huggins is the latest South Carolina WR the Hokies are after signing Jacoby Pinckney in the 2019 class, already gaining a commitment from Jalin Hyatt in the 2020 class, and looking to add Jalen Coit to their 2020 class. Berrong has seen his recruitment take off the spring including an offer from the Hokies who have an interesting connection to him since Vance Vice was at one time Berrong's father's science teacher. Berrong's visit to Blacksburg is one of three visits he's taking in the next three days along with a Thursday visit to NC State and a Saturday trip to Penn State.
