Virginia Tech Hires Cody Brewer as Wrestling Assistant

Virginia Tech wrestling head coach Tony Robie has added a new assistant to the staff, bringing Cody Brewer to Blacksburg. Brewer has spent the previous three seasons as an assistant at Northwestern, helping guide the Wildcats lightweights into a national power. "We are incredibly excited to welcome Cody and his fiancée, Rachel, to Blacksburg," said Robie. "Cody's accolades speak for themselves. As a coach, he has already proven that he can develop wrestlers and put them in a position to win national titles." Brewer was an accomplished wrestler in his own right, winning the 2015 national championship at 133 pounds while at Oklahoma. He was a four-time All-American with the Sooners, compiling a career record of 95-22. As an assistant at Northwestern, Brewer helped develop two-time All-American Sebastian Rivera, who earned the No. 1 seed at the NCAA Championships in the 125-pound weight class this season. Virginia Tech has traditionally seen more success at the heavier weights, so Brewer's presence with the program should help the team develop their lower weight classes. "We have many talented lower weights that will benefit from Cody's presence over the next several years," Robie said. "I know that he is excited to come to Blacksburg and start helping us on our quest to become the very best." Brewer has some familiarity with those around the Hokies' program. Fellow Virginia Tech assistant Jared Frayer was an assistant coach at Oklahoma from the time Brewer was a true freshman until his redshirt sophomore season. Brewer fills the second assistant coach spot that was left vacant when Frank Molinaro left the program to continue training for international competition in December. Former Virginia Tech national finalist Devin Carter filled in as an assistant coach for the remainder of the season while earning his Ph.D.
