Amanda Hollandsworth, a member of the first ever recruiting class for Virginia Tech's women's golf team, has qualified for the 2019 US Women's Open. She did so by shooting a 1-under 141 in a 36-hole qualifier at Springfield Country Club on Tuesday. https://twitter.com/HokiesWGolf/status/1123379274017398784?s=19 Hollandsworth has been trying to qualify for the event for much of her golfing career. Finally, she was able to breakthrough this year. “You have to hope every year that you’re going to make it, but this year just felt different going in," Hollandsworth told The Roanoke Times. For a Virginia Tech women's golf program that was only established in 2013, Hollandsworth has been a big part of their rise to NCAA relevancy. The graduate student helped the Hokies secure their first ever bid to the NCAA regional in 2018. Just last week, the Hokies learned that they had earned a second straight NCAA regional bid. All the while, Hollandsworth has been a big part of the Hokies success. According to HokieSports.com, she was the first ever commit to the Virginia Tech women's golf team. In her college career, Hollandsworth has had great scoring success. She boasts a 75.16 career scoring average for the Hokies, including a 73.21 average in 14 rounds during the Spring 2019 season. Hollandsworth's latest accomplishment is yet another step in the right direction for a young Virginia Tech women's golf program. The fact that the first ever player to commit to the program will now compete in a major event is in some ways a storybook ending, but in others just the beginning both for Hollandsworth in her personal career and for VT's rising women's golf program.
