Numbers are tight, but Virginia Tech is likely to try to add 1-2 defensive tackles this recruiting cycle with Gary Smith, one of VT’s top DT targets, including the Hokies in his top 5.
Virginia Tech was one of three ACC schools to make Smith’s top 5 alongside Duke and Florida State with Ole Miss and Vanderbilt of the SEC rounding out the five. Smith had this to say about why the Hokies made the top 5 and why VT can be a “very good fit” for him.
“It’s a very good fit for what I want to accomplish in life,” Gary Smith said. “They are one of the best defenses in the history of college football and they have had plenty of guys with the same playing style as me succeed in there system. I feel I could possibly be the next.”
Smith had this to say about why the other teams made his top 5.
“They are all places that I can see myself playing at and I think they are all the best fits for me,” Smith said.
What’s clear is that Smith sees all five of these teams as places he could fit in and succeed in pursuit of all his ambitions at the collegiate level.
Smith told us that he hasn’t taken any visits “lately” and though he doesn’t have any visits scheduled, he does intend to take official visits to all of the schools in his top 5. Even with Smith not taking visits recently, that hasn’t stopped these 5 schools from pushing hard for Smith with the Hokies in contact quite often with him.
Gary Smith also told us that he’s built strong relationships with Justin Fuente and Charley Wiles with Smith having a verbal conversation with Wiles “at least once a week.” Additionally, Smith had this to say about the relationship he’s built with Justin Fuente.
“He likes me a lot. He says I would fit perfectly in what they are trying to do in the future,” Smith said.
Looking ahead, Smith doesn’t have a timeline for making a collegiate decision, but he does have an idea on what the key factors will be when that time comes.
“I’m just looking for a place where I can play ball and strive to be great. I just want to be successful in all aspects,” Smith said.
Virginia Tech is in the hunt for talented DT Gary Smith as the Hokies hope to add one of their top defensive tackle targets to their 2020 class.
