Virginia Tech’s major summer recruiting barbecue is set for July 27th with the Hokies set to host an impressive group of visiting recruits including 2021 four-star DE Kelvin Gilliam as he confirmed to us.
Gilliam, a talented Richmond area recruit, has emerged as one of VT’s top defensive line targets in a 2021 class that is loaded with in-state talent especially along the defensive line. The interest is quite mutual as Gilliam has visited VT previously with his most recent visit coming on an elite Junior Day in January.
Ahead of his next VT visit, Gilliam has a good idea of what he’s hoping to see on his visit.
“To connect more with the players and coaches and just get a great feel of home,” Gilliam said.
No one should be surprised by the strong offer list and heavy interest Gilliam is receiving after having 44 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 9 QB hurries, and 1 forced fumble as a sophomore for Richmond powerhouse Highland Springs.
Gilliam’s talent hasn’t flown under-the-radar among the major recruiting publications with Gilliam being rated a four-star by 247 Sports and ranked in the top 10 in Virginia by 247 Sports and Rivals. Even with all that praise, Gilliam’s focus remains on his development.
“My reaction was that I might be a 4-star athlete, I still have work to do and always stay hungry and humble,” Gilliam said.
That interest shows most with the schools involved in his recruitment with Gilliam looking to take visits to Clemson and Michigan this month in addition to his VT trip. Additionally, Virginia Tech and West Virginia are the schools currently recruiting Gilliam the hardest while he feels Auburn and South Carolina may be the closest to offering him next.
Charley Wiles has led the charge for the Hokies as Gilliam told us that he has built a “great relationship” in part because of the connection they have via Gilliam’s high school DL coach, former Virginia Tech DT Derrick Hopkins. Hopkins isn’t the former Hokie coaching Gilliam as Highland Springs’ head coach is former VT DB Loren Johnson.
Those 2 former Hokies have been able to give Gilliam plenty of advice about how to approach his recruitment, encouraging him to learn more about VT and other programs while being able to provide some insight about their experiences at VT.
“Well my coaches always say be humble and to always learn more about the program and so two of my coaches went to VT so that’s a great initiative,” Gilliam said.
Looking ahead, Gilliam is feeling good about where he’s at with his recruitment while planning to trim his list down to a top 10 sometime during his junior year.
“I know I’m feeling very pleased with my recruitment and I’ll be making my top 10 sometime my junior year,” Gilliam said.
Given what Kelvin Gilliam has told us recently and in the past about VT’s interest and his visits to Blacksburg, it would be very surprising if the Hokies didn’t make his top 10.
What’s most clear is that there’s lots of mutual interest between the Hokies and Kelvin Gilliam with VT in a good spot at this point in his recruitment.
