DE Nathan Proctor Will Transfer Away From Virginia Tech

Defensive end Nathan Proctor announced today that he has decided to leave Virginia Tech and transfer to another program. https://twitter.com/Nate_la_gran_21/status/1164637937079869442?s=20 Proctor's departure does take away some of the Hokies' depth at defensive end though signs were that he had fallen down the depth chart especially with younger defensive ends like Eli Adams and Jaevon Becton being mentioned among the backups. The former four-star recruit was a major part of a talented 2017 class that went on an impressive run in the final several weeks in terms of landing highly-rated players starting with Proctor at the Under Armour All-America Game. Once on campus, he moved from linebacker to defensive end as expected and redshirted during the 2017 season unsurprisingly given the position change. Proctor played in 8 games as a redshirt freshman with 3 tackles but as mentioned above, appeared to fall down the depth chart and behind some younger players. Proctor's decision to leave now does give him a few days before many Power 5 and Group of 5 college start their fall semesters, giving Proctor the time to enroll if he has his eyes set on a particular school. If he doesn't, don't be surprised if Proctor looks at the JUCO route for a semester as a way to be immediately eligible next season and be able to get to play at the JUCO level rather than have to wait for a semester at Virginia Tech. His departure also opens up a scholarship in a recruiting cycle where every scholarship is very valuable especially with the Hokies having single-digit seniors for the second-straight season and looking to likely sign a class of around 15 players.
