Virginia Tech has limited spots in their 2020 class and is putting a premium on pursuing a few top targets including five-star DE Desmond Evans. Yesterday, Evans made it clear that the Hokies are a priority for him with Virginia Tech making his top 5.

Evans' top 5 has a regional flair with the Hokies making the cut along with North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida for the elite defensive end out of North Carolina. These 5 made the cut over offers from other major programs like Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Texas A&M, and more.

North Carolina has been considered the favorite in part because of how often that Evans has visited Chapel Hill, likely in part due to his proximity to UNC, but Virginia Tech is definitely a contender to beat out the Tar Heels and trio of SEC East programs. Additionally, it seems likely that all five of these schools should have the chance to host Evans on an official visit, giving each one a prime opportunity to make a major impression that could change his recruitment significantly.

There's no doubt that Evans is an elite recruit who, according to 247 Sports, have 25 tackles for loss and 12 sacks last season after having 14 sacks as a sophomore, an impressive performance that shows how Evans has star potential at the next level. Evans also has fantastic size at 6'6'' and almost 240 pounds already, something that should help make him an instant contributor at the collegiate level.

The Hokies are in the hunt for Desmond Evans as they battle in-state North Carolina and a trio of SEC East schools for one of the best 2020 recruits on the East Coast.

Desmond Evans in the Recruiting Rankings

Nationally, Evans is ranked as the third best 2020 recruit by ESPN, 21st best by the 247 Sports Composite, 30th best by 247 Sports, and 48th best by Rivals. In the state of North Carolina, Evans is ranked as the best 2020 recruit by ESPN and the 247 Sports Composite, and second best by 247 Sports and Rivals. Positionally, Evans is ranked as the second best defensive end by ESPN, best weakside DE by 247 Sports, second best DE by the 247 Sports Composite, and third best weakside DE by Rivals.
