Since the announcement that Adam Smith would transfer, the Hokies have been busy on the junior college recruiting looking to add some more size to the frontcourt with an extra scholarship available. Multiple junior college players were on campus this past weekend and one of them became the Hokies' newest commit.
Johnny Hamilton now becomes the fourth commit and first junior college commit of this Virginia Tech recruiting class. Hamilton will join Kerry Blackshear and Zach LeDay as new additions to a frontcourt that is returning Satchel Pierce and Shane Henry next season.
Hamilton is originally from Trinidad and Tobago, and has been in the United States for only a few years. Hamilton is a fairly raw basketball player, but has huge upside due to his size and the fact that he seems to be a fairly coachable player given his long list of offers that included Wichita State, Oklahoma State, SMU, and Cincinnati among others.
Hamilton will need to add some weight to his current 215 pounds especially since he is 6'11''. Hamilton does have the frame to add a lot more weight on without giving up much if any of the athleticism that he currently has.
Offensively, Hamilton does not have much range but he is very productive around the rim whether that be finding space to get a layup or slamming down a put-back dunk off of a missed shot. Hamilton will need to continue to improve his offensive game, but he at least has shown that he is very reliable right around the rim.
Hamilton is an extremely good defensive player that averaged 8.9 rebounds and 4.3 blocks last season for Jacksonville College. Hamilton's athleticism and fairly high work ethic help make him an extremely good shot blocker who has the size to continue to be an imposing force in the post as a shot blocker.
Hamilton will be somewhat of the unknown of the group of players in the frontcourt as the new guy out of junior college, but Buzz Williams has a very good eye for finding talent at the junior college level as proven by his success at Marquette with JUCO guys like NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler.
Hamilton is a very intriguing player that should be a great addition to a Virginia Tech frontcourt that still needed to add some more size.
