Three-Star C John Ojiako Commits to Virginia Tech

After gaining a commitment from three-star SG Nahiem Alleyne this past Sunday, Virginia Tech added their second 2019 commit in three days via three-star C John Ojiako. John Ojiako chose the Hokies over Georgia and LSU, who made his final 3, while also holding offers from Pittsburgh, Kansas State, Rhode Island, and others. Ojiako becomes the fourth commit for VT's 2019 class and third to reclassify alongside Alleyne, four-star PG Jalen Cone, and three-star PG/SG Hunter Cattoor, the only commit not to have reclassified from the 2020 class. Since receiving an offer weeks into Mike Young's tenure, Ojiako had emerged as Virginia Tech's top big man target in the 2020 class and gives the Hokies some much-needed frontcourt depth for next season and a talented young big man to develop. Looking ahead, it appears to be safe bet that Ojiako will at least be a rotation player next season with the decision of Kerry Blackshear certain to affect how large Ojiako's role is next season. With two scholarships still available, the Hokies appear not to be done yet recruiting the 2019 class with late-rising forward Lok Wur including Virginia Tech in his top 5 along with Creighton, Texas A&M, Oregon, and Hawaii. For the Hokies, it'll be important for the Hokies to find a way to get Wur to visit even without appearing to have the luxury of an official visit being available. However, the biggest question that remains is where will Kerry Blackshear play next season? If Blackshear ends up going elsewhere, it seems most likely that VT will either try to use that scholarship on a grad transfer like Idaho State transfer Alonzo Walker or hold onto that scholarship to preserve its availability for the 2020 class.

John Ojiako in the Recruiting Rankings

Ojiako is rated as a four-star recruit by ESPN while 247 Sports, Rivals, and the 247 Sports Composite rate him as a three-star recruit.
