Four-star DE Kelvin Gilliam was among the biggest names who were on campus this past Saturday for Virginia Tech's annual Blacksburg Bash with his visit going quite well. Gilliam said that his visit was "amazing and informative" as he spent plenty of time with Justin Fuente and Charley Wiles. "I sat down and talked to Coach Fuente and other coaches, took a tour of the campus with Coach Wiles, and talked to some players," Gilliam said about what he did during his visit to VT. His time with Justin Fuente was one of the most notable things on his itinerary yesterday with that conversation going quite well. "It was great. He gave us a background on how why so many people choose VT and how it can impact your future," Gilliam said about his time with Justin Fuente. Kelvin Gilliam also told us that his time with DL coach Charley Wiles was "great" with Wiles being the tour guide for him and his family when they went around campus. Unsurprisingly, Gilliam's time with the coaches was a big factor in what stood out to him during his VT visit. "Just spending time with the coaches and getting to know VT a little more," Gilliam said on what stood out. Gilliam also had the chance to talk to a couple players including potential starting DE Emmanuel Belmar who gave him some insight as to why he chose the Hokies along with some advice for how to go through his recruitment. "He was telling me to enjoy the entire process and great things coming my way and I asked him things like why he chose Virginia Tech and things like that," Gilliam said. So how did this visit impact his recruitment and view of Virginia Tech? "That it’s a great place and a lot of alumni enjoy it and say only great things about VT," Gilliam said. Now part of that impression appears due to the Virginia Tech connections on the coaching staff at his high school, Highland Springs, with former VT DT Derrick Hopkins being his defensive line coach and former VT DB Loren Johnson being the head coach at Highland Springs. Gilliam's visit gave him the opportunity to learn more about VT for himself beyond what he had simply heard, following some of the advice he's received from Johnson and Hopkins in considering Virginia Tech. The Hokies are a top contender for Kelvin Gilliam with the Richmond DE getting the chance not only to build stronger bonds with the coaching staff but also pick the brain of current DE Emmanuel Belmar on his latest visit to Virginia Tech.
