After two seasons at Virginia Tech, star guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker announced this evening that he will be declaring for the 2019 NBA Draft and signing with an agent, ending his time in Blacksburg. Alexander-Walker averaged 16.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.9 steals in 34.4 minutes per game while shooting 47.4% from the field, 37.4% from three-point range, and 77.8% from the free-throw line. The Canadian also was named to the All-ACC Third Team this season while making the midseason watch lists for multiple major awards. After his breakout sophomore season, Alexander-Walker is considered a surefire first round pick with ESPN, CBS Sports, and Sports Illustrated ranking him among the top 25 prospects in the 2019 NBA Draft. While some may say the timing of the announcement is odd given the news of Virginia Tech hiring Wofford's Mike Young as the next head coach, it all seems coincidental. It's been predicted for months that Alexander-Walker was very likely to rightfully declare for the NBA Draft regardless of whether the coach was Buzz Williams or someone else.
