USF WR Commit Tyree Saunders Receives a Virginia Tech Offer

Virginia Tech has started to send out more offers after hosting satellite camps all over the East Coast including one to three-star WR Tyree Saunders, a South Florida commit. Saunders had this to say about his reaction to earning a Hokies' offer after camping at VT's Florida satellite camp last week. "It was kind of surprising but expected. I went to a camp recently and Coach (Charley) Wiles told me to come and just do my thing to get an offer from in front of the head coach. I gave them a show and ran a 4.44 in the 40. So I just had to wait till they had their staff meeting this Friday morning, which led to me getting the call later," Saunders said. Saunders added that the Hokies' interest took off after his camp performance with their final evaluation after his camp performance leading to Charley Wiles extending the offer to Saunders. Overall, Saunders told us that this offer has a "heavy" impact on his recruitment given that it's his first offer from an ACC school. However, the Hokies will have some work to do to flip the South Florida commit especially given the Bulls' in-state advantage, but Saunders is open to the possibility when asked about how important playing close to home in college is for him. "It's important but I am willing to leave for the right situation and the best opportunity," Saunders said. Looking ahead, Saunders told us that he plans to take his first visit to Virginia Tech on July 27th for the Hokies' major recruiting barbecue that once again appears loaded with top talent in the 2020, 2021, and 2022 classes. With no other visits currently scheduled, the Hokies appear to be emerging as the biggest challenger to South Florida over other Power 5 schools like Iowa State and Kansas State. When asked about the strengths and weaknesses of his game, Saunders told us that his speed and his quick thinking, which likely comes from a high football IQ, are among his strengths while he has room to grow in the finesse that he has on his routes whether that's getting out of breaks faster or knowing when to accelerate and decelerate to mess up a defensive back's timing. Despite having room to grow, Saunders was impressive this past season on the field with 54 catches for 937 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns. Given his speed, Saunders could be an intriguing slot receiver option to pair with the speedy Jalin Hyatt while VT also hopes to add another talented outside receiver to their class, four-star WR KeAndre Lambert. Overall, the Hokies have plenty of work to do to try to flip USF commit Tyree Saunders, but it's clear that the Hokies will have the opportunity to do just that especially when he visits in late July.
