Mike Young and Virginia Tech made a major recruiting splash today gaining a commitment from 2020 four-star SG Joe Bamisile out of Monacan High School in Richmond, VA.
Bamisile was previously committed to Northwestern and also holds offers from several other major programs including Florida, Miami, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, and West Virginia. Bamisile is the Hokies' first 2020 commit and the highest-ranked commit by the 247 Sports Composite
since Landers Nolley in the 2018 class.
This is the latest major splash in an offseason that has been full of them since Mike Young's arrival joining the retention of Landers Nolley
and Wabissa Bede
, the addition of Wofford transfer Keve Aluma
, and building a 2019 recruiting class from scratch headlined by four-star PG Jalen Cone
So why did Bamisile decide to flip from Northwestern to Virginia Tech?
"I just think it’s best for me to stay in state closer to home,' Bamisile said. He also added that after staying to home, the Hokies' coaching staff was the second biggest factor in his decision to commit to Virginia Tech.
Bamisile's clearly strong connection with the coaching staff started almost immediately after Mike Young's arrival with the Hokies' head coach visiting Bamisile
in April days after his arrival in Blacksburg. While Bamisile did commit to Northwestern days later, that meeting looks like it was the foundation that helped Virginia Tech make the push for Bamisile to stay in-state and play in Blacksburg.
So how does Joe Bamisile feel he'll fit in Mike Young's program?
"I’m going to be a scoring guard and obviously try to continue the winning mentality and culture under Coach Young," Bamisile said about how he'll fit at VT.
Here's a look at some Bamisile highlights from the elite NBAPA Top 100 camp earlier this summer.
Virginia Tech has made arguably their biggest recruiting splash of the summer flipping four-star SG Joe Bamisile, giving the Hokies even more momentum as they look to build a class that could easily be VT's first top 25 class since the 2017 class that included 2019 first round pick
and Summer League First Teamer
