Even with tight numbers, Virginia Tech is still continuing to evaluate talented 2020 recruits from across the country including those nearby like three-star Southwest Virginia OL Gage Bassham.
Bassham was most recently at Virginia Tech for the Hokies' first camp of the summer and though he wasn't offered by the Hokies that day, Bassham told us that the Hokies are continuing to show him "a lot" of interest with OL coach Vance Vice continuing to evaluate him and determine whether the Hokies will offer him or not.
One good sign that Virginia Tech is seriously interested in Bassham is the fact that Bassham told us that Vance Vice is in contact with him "almost daily."
Bassham also believes that a Virginia Tech offer would not only lead to a domino effect of offers but also would be a major offer for him.
"It would mean the world. I’ve heard once you get one power 5 they flow in and I know a lot of power 5s that are on the verge of offering and that would do it," Bassham on what he thinks the impact of a VT offer would have on his recruitment.
While 247 Sports lists Bassham as an offensive tackle, the Hokies are currently pursuing him as an offensive guard. Given his size and his high school experience at OT, Bassham does bring some of the versatility that Vance Vice does cherish in an offensive lineman.
While Bassham didn't receive an offer when he camped with Virginia Tech, he did enjoy his most recent trip to Blacksburg.
"It was really good. It’s a great school with an amazing atmosphere and great people," Bassham said.
Looking ahead, Bassham told us that he plans to take visits in the fall for games at Virginia Tech, Virginia, West Virginia, Old Dominion, Liberty, and potentially more.
If the Hokies do offer Bassham, Virginia Tech would likely be the favorite on-paper in part due to how much success the Hokies have had locking down the top Southwest Virginia recruits recently including James Mitchell, Cole Beck, and Jesse Hanson. Additionally, Bassham has been at Virginia Tech multiple times and is building strong relationships not only with Vance Vice but also with VT's coaching staff as a whole.
Virginia Tech is showing lots of interest in Gage Bassham, but the question remains whether the Hokies will offer the talented Southwest Virginia offensive lineman.
