After weeks of waiting, Virginia Tech men's basketball quietly revealed their full non-conference schedule for the 2019-2020 season
The schedule is highlighted by the Hokies' trip to the Maui Invitational that includes games against Michigan State; Dayton or Georgia; and Kansas, UCLA, BYU, or Chaminade.
Those 3 games will be the only non-conference games Virginia Tech plays away from Blacksburg with the Hokies adding 8 more home games to round out their non-conference schedule. The home non-conference schedule will include a game against fellow in-state school VMI and against defending Big South champions Gardner-Webb who led at halftime against #1 seed Virginia in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
There's no doubt that this non-conference schedule is disappointingly weak especially with a second-straight year of home non-conference games that lack an opponent from a major or high mid-major conference. However, the move to put together a weak non-conference schedule shouldn't be too big of a surprise given the youth and inexperience of this Hokies' team that is reminiscent of the first year of the Buzz Williams era.
The other most notable thing about the Hokies' non-conference schedule is the two-week gap between the end of the Hokies' trip to the Maui Invitational and VT's next non-conference game at home against Chattanooga.
Take a look below to see the full non-conference schedule along with the previously released ACC opener for Virginia Tech men's basketball.
