With the spring evaluation period in full swing, Virginia Tech has been extending offers to recruits all across the country including one to 2021 four-star RB Brandon Campbell out of Texas, his first Power 5 offer.
"I was actually very surprised but at the same time I was expecting it just because I’ve been in contact with the coaches. I just didn’t think it would come this soon!" Campbell said about his reaction to receiving a VT offer.
As Campbell mentioned, the Hokies had shown interest in him for a little bit before deciding to offer him.
"A lot actually, Virginia Tech is one of those schools I felt like put a lot of players out there and actually developed their players, and they don’t just offer everyone so when they did offer me, it meant a lot," Campbell said about the Hokies' interest in him prior to being offered.
While the Hokies have offered some recruits from Texas in recent years largely via phone calls, offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen made the trip to Pearland, Texas to offer the talented running back.
"I actually talked to the OC and he told me that he wanted to offer me over the phone but he thought it would mean more in person so I talked to him there and he just really explained how he wanted me to keep working hard!" Campbell said.
The fact that Brad Cornelsen made the trip to offer Campbell in person also shows how the talented Texas tailback is poised to be one of Virginia Tech's top running back targets in the 2021 class. Additionally, Campbell also has some ties to Virginia Tech with family that lives in and around the Blacksburg area.
"I have family that stays in the area so I like that I could play in front of family. My mom's brother stays up there so I know she wouldn’t mind coming there to watch me play if I were to decide to go there," Campbell said.
So how does this offer impact Campbell's recruitment? He tells us that it has a bigger impact than some many expect.
"This definitely means a lot to me. I have ties with Virginia Tech and I’ve always liked watching old tapes of Micheal Vick there, that’s my favorite player, so it definitely is going to have a bigger impact...bigger than some may expect," Campbell said.
Looking ahead to the summer, Campbell told us that he plans to visit Virginia Tech along with all the other schools that have offered him so far. Campbell's offer list also seems poised to grow with schools like Clemson, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Florida, Washington, Texas Tech, and UTSA among those showing interest who haven't offered him yet.
Virginia Tech has gotten involved in Brandon Campbell's recruitment early and while adding a four-star Texas running back is normally a major challenge for the Hokies, VT's chances with Campbell appear much better than usual.
Brandon Campbell in the Recruiting Rankings
