Virginia Tech Football Recruiting Notes February 2nd Edition

VT Cadets VT Flag 1
The Virginia Tech Hokies are making the final push towards National Signing Day 2018 while also putting more emphasis on their 2019 recruiting. With that said, here are some updates on top 2018 and 2019 targets.

Virginia Tech Makes the Top 6 For Five-Star RB Devyn Ford

If you know anything about 2019 recruiting, you know that Devyn Ford is one of the best recruits in the country and Virginia Tech's top overall target. Now, the five-star RB has released his top 6 with the Hokies making the cut. https://twitter.com/TsunamiFord/status/959143015540514819 Ford's top 6 is full of regional schools with VT, Clemson, Penn State, Ohio State, and North Carolina all making the cut while Oklahoma is the big surprise on this list. According to Rivals, Ford will be visiting Blacksburg this weekend on an unofficial visit and is planning on making a commitment in June. VT is considered the slight favorite for Ford at this point with VT having a chance to make a big statement with this weekend's visit. The fact that Ford mentions that the best relationships he has with coaches in his recruitment are with Justin Fuente and Zohn Burden is another great sign for the Hokies. Penn State appears to be the biggest challenger given how his teammate and four-star OT Nana Asiedu has signed with the Nittany Lions. Clemson is also a contender though you have to wonder how serious of a threat they are in his recruitment if they continue to recruit him as a DB and not as a RB as Ford told The Free Lance-Star. Ford is well-regarded across the country as a five-star recruit by Rivals and high four-star recruit by all other major recruiting services. The Hokies are considered the slight favorite for Ford at the moment, but the Hokies have a lot of work ahead to land their top target in the 2019 class.

VT in Top 2 for New 2019 Offer Malik Washington

Earlier this week, Virginia Tech offered 2019 three-star ATH Malik Washington out of Georgia. The three-star athlete has a solid offer list full of power 5 schools yet the Hokies offer put VT right at the top of his recruitment. Washington told us that Virginia Tech and Duke were currently his top 2 while Auburn and Michigan State are also currently under serious consideration in his recruitment. He also told us that NC State and Missouri are schools who could hop into contention into his recruitment if they offered him. Malik Washington told us that "education, game atmosphere, and tradition" were all factors why the Hokies and Duke are his top two schools. Washington does plan to visit Duke soon while he is also hoping to take visits to Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. Washington is currently ranked as one of the top 60 athletes in the country and top 70 recruits in Georgia by 247 Sports and the 247 Sports Composite. Looking ahead, Washington told us that his recruitment will come down to which school "recruits me more." For now, the Hokies and Duke have the inside track for the talented Georgia athlete.

Pair of 2018 Targets Taking Visits Elsewhere

Virginia Tech only has a few targets left on the board for the 2018 class, two of whom will be taking visits elsewhere this weekend. https://twitter.com/anthonygrant204/status/959454664940023811 https://twitter.com/ChatmanJamarcus/status/959473095361859585 Three-star RB and Tennessee commit Anthony Grant is visiting Florida State while three-star DL Jamarcus Chatman is visiting Miami. The Hokies have made Grant and Chatman priorities with Grant visiting in December and Chatman visiting in January. Chatman released a top four this past week that included VT, Miami, Florida State, and North Carolina. Meanwhile, VT, UNC, and Florida State are all hoping to flip Grant while the Vols are making a big push to hold onto him with Grant visiting Knoxville last week. The Hokies are right in the hunt for both Grant and Chatman with VT having the room for both highly regarded Georgian recruits.
