The AP Top 25 poll is out for Week 2 of the college football season and Virginia Tech made one of the biggest jumps in this week’s voting. Following their 24-3 blowout victory over No. 19 Florida State, the Hokies moved to No. 12 in the latest poll. Virginia Tech’s ranking is the highest the team has been ranked since Week 5 of last season, when the Hokies were also ranked No. 12 going into a matchup against No. 2 Clemson. It’s the first time the team has been inside the Top 15 since they were ranked No. 13 on Nov. 4 last season against Miami. Virginia Tech opened the season ranked No. 20 in the country, but a strong defensive performance led the Hokies to an upset victory on the road and a leap in the rankings. Meanwhile, the Seminoles find themselves outside the Top 25 after a loss in which they were unable to score a touchdown despite being in the red zone multiple times. The only team to move more spots in this week’s poll is No. 11 LSU, who moved up 14 spots in the rankings. With FSU dropping out of the Top 25, that leaves three ACC schools still ranked. Clemson stayed put at No. 2 following a 48-7 win over FCS opponent Furman. Miami had the biggest drop in the rankings, moving from No. 8 to No. 22 following a 33-17 loss to LSU. Boston College and NC State also received votes this week. Hokies’ Week 6 opponent Notre Dame moved up four spots in this week’s poll, landing at No. 8 following a 24-17 victory over Michigan. Virginia Tech also moved up three spots to No. 14 in the Amway Coaches Poll, joining Clemson as the only ACC schools in the Top 15. FSU dropped out of the poll after being ranked No. 19 in the preseason. Virginia Tech returns home this Saturday for a matchup with William and Mary. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
