Following the Hokies’ 31-14 win over No. 22 Duke on Saturday, the buzz around the program is back. It’s only Tuesday, but there has already been a lot of news surrounding the Virginia Tech football team this week. Hokies receive another primetime game
Virginia Tech just played a primetime game against an opponent from North Carolina, and in two weeks they’ll play another. The game at UNC on Oct. 13 will be a 7 p.m. kickoff and will be broadcasted on either ESPN or ESPNU. After playing Notre Dame at 8 p.m. this upcoming Saturday, the UNC game will be the fourth primetime game for the Hokies this season. Virginia Tech is currently 2-0 in primetime conference games, defeating Florida State 24-3 in Week 1 and getting the win against Duke this week.Beamer to be honored with monument
There will be plenty to celebrate when Virginia Tech takes on Notre Dame this weekend in Blacksburg, but at the top of every Hokie’s list should be the unveiling of a monument to honor legendary Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. The athletic department announced on Monday that a monument honoring the first-ballot College Football Hall of Famer will be unveiled at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Saturday. The monument will be located in Moody Plaza, a common gathering spot located outside the southwest corner of Lane Stadium. The monument will be a life-size tribute to Coach Beamer, which, according to the athletic department, “will be very approachable just like the man who was taught the values of hard work and loyalty on his family’s farm in rural Hillsville, Virginia.” The monument, unlike others of its kind, will not have a pedestal and will feature a bench next to it, allowing fans to sit and take pictures with the iconic coach.Willis, Floyd earn ACC honors
Backup quarterback Ryan Willis stepped up to lead the offense in Josh Jackson’s absence, and his performance earned him ACC Quarterback of the Week honors. In his first start for Tech, Willis was 17-for-27 with 332 yards and three touchdowns. The redshirt junior earned his first career win as a starting quarterback. With Jackson out for the foreseeable future, Willis will continue to lead the Hokies as they get into the heart of their conference schedule. On the other side of the ball Saturday, Reggie Floyd earned ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors. Floyd finished the game with eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one pass breakup as the defense dominated against the Blue Devils.
