Bennett is the 19th transfer addition for the Hokies including the fourth who was a running back at his previous school along with Bowling Green's Terion Stewart, Central Missouri's Marcellous Hawkins, and Tennessee's Cameron Seldon who is expected to move to WR for VT. Bennett has one year of eligibility remaining.
Bennett ran for 781 yards and 11 touchdowns while 5.8 yards per carry and had 25 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns this past season for Coastal Carolina. He also had 519 yards after-contact and 39 missed tackles in 11 games per PFF, earning a 79.1 offense grade including an 82.9 rushing grade.
It is surprising to see the Hokies add another running back, though this is another example of the Hokies using the more space they have from the scholarship expansion from 85 to 105. Bennett should be able to push Terion Stewart for the starting job though I still would project Stewart to be the lead back. Regardless, Bennett's addition likely sets the stage for a Stewart-Bennett tandem to lead the way in 2025 before young guys take over down the road.
Bennett is also a versatile back who has 20+ receptions in his three full seasons at Coastal Carolina. That should enable the Hokies to use him in a variety of ways even if he isn't the starting running back for VT in 2025.
With Bennett on board, I would be stunned if Virginia Tech brought in another running back, but I was stunned they added another running back in Bennett in the first place so who knows.
