Just three days after the conclusion of Virginia Tech's regular season, redshirt freshman defensive back Devante Smith has announced that he intends to transfer from the program. Smith made the announcement Tuesday afternoon on Twitter.
"First off I'd like to thank Coach Fuente and his coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to compete at the highest level," Smith begins in his post. "I also will like to thank everyone in academics and others who have helped me along the way."
"After talking with my family and coaches it is in my best interest to transfer from Virginia Tech. Much love to Hokie nation and finish the season off strong."
Smith did not see any playing time this season during his redshirt freshman year. The 6-1, 211-pound defensive back was a three-star recruit when he signed with Virginia Tech in 2017.
Smith joins D'Andre Plantin, Rico Kearney and Sean Savoy as players to transfer away from the Hokies program during the 2018 season.
