Buzz Williams and the Virginia Tech Hokies have put together one of the best recruiting classes in the history of Virginia Tech's basketball program in 2017 with commitments from borderline five-star guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, four-star point guard Wabissa Bede, and three-star forward PJ Horne. However, the Hokies may not be done yet with their eyes set on trying to add another borderline five-star guard.
Borderline five-star guard MJ Walker is taking an official visit to Virginia Tech this weekend as first reported by ESPN's Jeff Goodman. Walker has a strong list of offers that includes powerhouses like Kansas, UCLA, and Syracuse with the Hokies being a main contender alongside Georgia Tech, Maryland, and Florida State with the Seminoles having already received an official visit from Walker.
With Florida State losing multiple stars including Jonathan Isaac and Dwayne Bacon, the Seminoles seem to be the favorite with FSU looking for help on the wing and having shown that potential "one-and-done" players can do well and keep their draft stock high like Isaac. However, the Hokies have gotten an official visit from Walker late in the process that is a big sign that the Hokies are a serious contender to get the borderline five-star Georgian.
While Virginia Tech is a major player for Walker, it is unclear how exactly they would be able to add Walker should he choose the Hokies with Virginia Tech not appearing to have a scholarship. One possibility based on this could be that someone on the Hokies' roster is about to transfer with the Hokies now intensifying their pursuit of Walker as they look to fill an available scholarship. One other possibility could be that Devin Wilson will make a return to the football team again this fall and therefore, his scholarship with shift to football allowing him to still play basketball and open up a scholarship for Walker.
However, MJ Walker is the type of recruit that Virginia Tech will definitely find a way to bring in if the Hokies can get him with this official visit being a sign that VT is definitely a contender. If they were to get Walker, this class would become the greatest recruiting class in Virginia Tech basketball history.
