The first spring practice of the James Franklin era at Virginia Tech is on the horizon with plenty of intriguing storylines as the Hokies hope Franklin can lead them back to the heights of the ACC and college football overall.
As Franklin gears up for his first season in Blacksburg, he enters a spring where there will be plenty of opportunity for risers and fallers as he blends a mix of returners with a group of 50+ additions from the transfer portal and the high school ranks. There's also the adjustment that new coordinators and schemes bring, though there will likely be some familiarity for the PSU transfers on offense with Franklin and OC Ty Howle's approach plus some familiarity with Brent Pry on the defensive side as he slides into the DC role.
On the defensive side in particular, there are also four Hokies who have some intriguing questions about what their positional futures will look like. One of those players in particular may end up shedding some light on what VT's defensive scheme will look like under Brent Pry and whether VT will shift back to a more pure 4-3 or stick with a 4-2-5 look.
That player is senior linebacker Kaleb Spencer.
