Fuente and his staff have thrown the kitchen sink at Hunter as they even allowed the four-star safety to leak the Hokies' Battle at Bristol uniforms. Justin Fuente and his staff have put an emphasis on winning big recruiting battles in the state of Virginia and tonight, the Hokies got their biggest in-state recruiting victory in years. Four-star safety Devon Hunter announced tonight at halftime of an Indian River High School basketball game that he has committed to Virginia Tech over North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, and Ole Miss. Hunter immediately becomes the top recruit in Virginia Tech's Class of 2017 and is one of the best high school players to ever commit to play for the Hokies. Here's how Hunter made his commitment and some post-commitment reaction from him. Hunter has been a national recruit for a long time and has offers from what seems to be just about every major program east of the Mississippi including Virginia Tech, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, Auburn, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, Penn State, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Miami, West Virginia, and more. Hunter was rated as a five-star by Scout and four-star recruit by ESPN, Rivals, and 247 Sports. Hunter is ranked as the 126th best recruit by ESPN, 47th best recruit by Rivals, and 45th best by 247 Sports and the 247 Sports Composite. Hunter is a top 5 safety by Rivals, 247 Sports, and the 247 Sports Composite with ESPN having him in the top 10 at safety In the state of Virginia, Hunter is solidly one of the best in Virginia as ESPN, 247 Sports, and the 247 Sports Composite have him ranked third in Virginia while Rivals has him ranked second in the Commonwealth, showing how big of an in-state statement the Hokies are making on the recruiting trail with Hunter's commitment. Hunter has the talent to potentially start immediately at safety though the fact that he won't be here till summer may make that slightly more difficult. However, no one should be surprised if Hunter is the starting free safety next fall and should at least start next season receiving a significant amount of playing time with the potential to earn a starting job as the season goes along if he doesn't earn it in August. Zohn Burden has been the primary recruiter for Devon Hunter and has done a fantastic job keeping the Hokies in the lead for Hunter even as Florida, North Carolina, and Auburn made very hard pushes that came up short in the end. Burden is one of the top recruiters in the 757 and someone that other big name programs won't like having to deal with on the trail as long as Burden is in Blacksburg. Congrats to Devon Hunter on his commitment to Virginia Tech.
