Petersen is the third member of the Hokies' recruiting class joining fellow former Marquette signee and prolific PG Leila Wells and standout Mid-Atlantic PF/C Myah Hazelton, who is the lone remaining commit from Kenny Brooks' previous class. The addition of the Wisconsin native Petersen now gives the Hokies nine players on their 2024-25 team, with the focus likely to continue to grow on adding talented transfers.
Petersen is also now the highest-rated signee in this class for Virginia Tech as she is ranked 68th by ESPN's rankings. During her high school, Petersen scored over 1,000 points while also earning being the East Central Conference Player of the Year three times in high school. This past season, Petersen earned All-State honors after averaging 17.7 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game.
When Petersen originally signed with Marquette, Megan Duffy had the following to say about Petersen per Marquette's press release at that time.
"We have watched Kayl win a high school state championship (in Wisconsin) and solidify her place as one of the top players on the Nike EYBL circuit with Wisconsin Flight Elite. Her versatility and skill set continues to grow each year. Marquette fans will love her blue-collar work ethic, relentless rebounding, and ability to score inside and out," Duffy said.
Petersen should be able to come in and immediately compete for playing time on the wing, though it's quite unlikely that she'll start this fall with Matilda Ekh certain to start and Carys Baker currently being a frontrunner to be the other starting wing/forward. Long term, there's no doubt that the 6' wing/forward Petersen has the potential to develop into a star for the Hokies.
