Franklin's comments illustrate the team's collective frustration with what was believed to be one of its biggest strengths before the season began. From 2022 to 2025, Love made 54 of 64 field goal attempts (84%) in his career. His 22 makes in 2023 were the best in the ACC and sixth nationally. Coming into the Pitt game, he was 42-of-44 in attempts under 40 yards. He was named ACC Honorable Mention in 2023 and 2024, and he currently ranks fourth all-time in scoring at Virginia Tech.
Yesterday's successes don't pay today's bills, though.
"He’s had a great career, but nobody really cares about career right now," Franklin said. "It’s what we’re doing right now, and it’s what you do today. And the reality is, you’re only as good as your last win. You’re only as good as your last kick."
