Justin Fuente and the Virginia Tech coaches have been busy on the recruiting trail after the dead period ended at midnight with the coaching staff spread out all across the East Coast and the South. Today, the Hokies received some good news about a top special teams target.

Punter Marshall Long of South Rowan High School in China Grove, North Carolina committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies this evening. Long has received scholarship offers from the Hokies and Army while Georgia also offered him a spot as a preferred walk-on. In the end, the Hokies prevailed in getting Long over Georgia.
Long was considering visiting Georgia, but he has now changed his plans after his decision to commit to Virginia Tech.

Even if the Bulldogs offer, Long seems almost certain to stay committed to Virginia Tech and sign with the Hokies on National Signing Day. Even though Long is a punter, the North Carolina native could also be potentially useful in recruiting players to Virginia Tech as a player that was offered after the arrival of Justin Fuente.
With A.J. Hughes now gone, the arrival of Marshall Long will set up a battle for the starting punter job between Long and Mitchell Ludwig. Ludwig will be the favorite as the backup for Hughes this past season, but Long brings in a strong reputation after being one of two punters that played in the Army All-American Bowl.
Of course, Long will not be here till the summer so that will hurt his chances of gaining the starting job, but Long definitely is going to get a chance to take the starting job. What is clear is that Long is the future for the Hokies at punter beyond the 2016 season with a redshirt possible if Ludwig wins the job this season.
Marshall Long is another solid addition as Virginia Tech looks to solidify the punter position for the next four years.
