The Virginia Tech Hokies bounced back from an upset loss to Syracuse with a dominant 37-16 victory over the Miami Hurricanes that has the Hokies now as the favorite in the ACC Coastal. Virginia Tech's Thursday night victory was one of their best performances of the season from a balanced offensive attack that had over 250 rushing and passing yards to a dominant defensive performance that had 8 sacks and only gave up 16 points.
There were plenty of standout players from this game but here are our choices for our Hokies of the Game against Miami.
Offensive Hokie of the Game: Travon McMillian
Jerod Evans would be the easy choice given his spotlight position, 3 touchdowns, and big performance but Evans was not perfect and one player stood out even more than Evans in what was a close call, Travon McMillian. Travon McMillian had his best game of the season so far as he had 18 carries for 131 rushing yards in what was his most rushing yards of the season and only his second time breaking the 100-yard mark this season. However, McMillian was absolutely dominant averaging 7.3 yards per carry and consistently getting good gains with some big plays. McMillian seemed to run with a confidence that we haven't really seen from the redshirt sophomore all season as he makes his fair share of cuts to break plenty of tackles. McMillian took advantage of some holes up the middle against a banged up Miami defense loaded with youth while also getting whatever he could when a big play wasn't there. Evans deserves his fair share of recognition for a strong performance as the junior QB went 21-for-33 for 259 passing yards and 2 touchdown while having 98 rushing yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Bucky Hodges also had his best game of the season with 7 catches for 66 yards and 2 touchdowns while Sam Rogers had some big moments with a 13-yard passing touchdown plus 2 catches for 72 yards.Defensive Hokie of the Game: Woody Baron
With Ken Ekanem and Nigel Williams out, the Hokies' defensive line stepped up and had an incredible performance on the way to a defensive performance that included 8 sacks and 12 tackles for loss for the Hokies. One player in particular stood out in Woody Baron who had one of the best games from a Virginia Tech defensive lineman over the past decade or more and should be in consideration for national weekly honors. Baron was dominant throughout the night as he had 6 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and 2 pass breakups in what was a tremendous performance in which Baron was a nightmare throughout the game. The senior defensive tackle could not be stopped in what was a performance that likely will catch the attention of not only many analysts but also some NFL scouts given his tremendous performance. Baron was dominant on the defensive line but he was far from being the only standout as Vinny Mihota popped his shoulder back in at one point in the game and finished the game with 5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks. Meanwhile, Trevon Hill made his first career start within a week of losing his grandmother and the redshirt freshman was quite good as he had 5 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Tremaine Edmunds was another star in this game as he had 10 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 sack while his brother Terrell had 7 tackles and a spectacular interception off of an Andrew Motuapuaka deflection.
