The Virginia Tech Hokies hosted their final big recruit weekend and camp in Blacksburg last Saturday and Sunday. The weekend was a huge success on the recruiting trail for the Hokies as they gained commitments from two three-star recruits, OT Patrick Kearns and LB Tavante Beckett.
The Hokies followed that up with a commitment on Monday from WR Divine Deablo who is ranked as the 172nd recruit in the country by the ESPN 300. Unfortunately, the Hokies were not able to continue that momentum this evening with another player who had a very good visit this past weekend to Blacksburg.
Three-star OLB/DE Brock Miller of John Carroll High School in Vero Beach, Florida committed to N.C. State over his other finalists Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Virginia, and California via TCPalm.com.
The Hokies were optimistic that Miller was going to commit to play in Blacksburg, but the rumors about N.C. State started this morning when VT Scoop's Evan Watkins flipped his prediction from Virginia Tech to N.C. State. It was a significant signal that the Wolfpack may be the pick of Miller, which has come to fruition this evening.
It is a disappointing recruiting loss for the Hokies, but it is unknown how big of a loss it is since Miller could have been an outside linebacker or defensive end. The loss is bigger if the Hokies were more likely to use him at defensive end since Virginia Tech currently lacks a defensive end commit in their Class of 2016 compared to having three OLBs committed.
The Hokies' focus at the defensive end spot will continue to be mainly on four-star DE Nick Coe and Florida commit Jaquan Bailey while three-star DEs Zack Gilbert and Patrick Jones III may also become higher-priority targets. At outside linebacker, the Hokies seem solid though are definitely making a push for Bethesda, Maryland OLB Keith Simms.
Missing out on Brock Miller is disappointing, but the Hokies will look to bounce back in the next two days with four-star WR Tino Ellis announcing tomorrow and three-star ATH Phillip Patterson announcing Saturday.
