Late-Fall Camp Predictions for Virginia Tech Football's Starting Competitions

We're past the midway mark of fall camp with the start of the 2026 Virginia Tech football season being less than two weeks away. With that in mind, here's my thoughts on the open starting competitions and who will win those jobs.

QB: Ethan Grunkemeyer

In reality, this was never a competition but since it is 'technically' an open competition, then I will make the easy pick of Ethan Grunkemeyer as starting quarterback as the Hokies' QB1. Even James Franklin earlier in fall camp basically said that everybody in the program can tell and/or knows who the starting QB is going to be. With the way Grunkemeyer is going about things, he and everyone around him knows he's the starting quarterback.

But you could've guessed that in mid-January once the quarterback room was set. The interesting battle in the QB room is whether freshman Troy Huhn can surpass UNC transfer Bryce Baker for the backup quarterback job.
