Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry announced a trio of changes to his coaching staff, parting ways with defensive coordinator/LBs coach Chris Marve, OL coach Ron Crook, and S&C coach Dwight Galt IV. All three are significant hires for Pry that will likely define his tenure going forward whether Pry ends up making the correct hires or not.

So with that in mind, here's a look at some potential names to watch for the Virginia Tech offensive line coach job. I will note that this is a mix of names that I think could make sense for the opening and/or I think will likely be involved in the search given various factors.

VT Co-OL Coach Brent Davis

Let's start with the internal option of promoting Brent Davis, who joined the Hokies' staff in a temporary spring role in 2023 before taking on a full-time analyst job. This started out as a friend of Pry's, who had been coordinator with Pry on Georgia Southern's 2010 staff, helping a friend of his out after a change in offensive philosophy led to Army moving on from Davis as their OC.

From there, Davis has played an important role in Tech's offense bringing his option background to the table which has played a role in many of the more successful moments for the VT offense including the effective read and speed options, and reverses.

There's certainly a ton of value that Davis brings to the table in the offensive evolution that should be retained regardless of the move that is made. There is also a case to be made for Davis to get the promotion and get his chance at running the offensive line.

There is stability that Davis would bring to this room while it seems safe to assume that he's had a large role in evaluating portal options. Additionally, player frustration about coaching quality centered on Crook and not Davis from what I've heard, so Davis getting the job likely could help Tech's hopes of trying to bring back Xavier Chaplin, Braelin Moore or both.

There is some risk though in making only a small change to a room that has been the weakest on the team over the past two years. Additionally, Davis has never had to recruit at a Power 4 level given his extensive background at Army. While the unique challenges of Army should make him a very adaptable recruiter ready for any challenge, there is an adjustment to being the lead recruiter for a position group at the Power 4 level.

If I'm Pry, I'm giving Davis an interview to see if he is the right man to take on the role given what he's brought to this offense during his time in Blacksburg.

WVU OL Coach Matt Moore

In my opinion, I think Tech should look to spend big to get a high-end proven offensive line coach similar to what Brent Pry initially did bringing Joe Rudolph in from Wisconsin.

One name who makes a lot of sense and is available is Matt Moore, the West Virginia offensive line coach who is available given the coaching change at WVU this offseason
