Predictions for Virginia Tech's Three Early Signing Day Targets

IMG 20191217 125504

Early Signing Day is just about here for the 2020 class with Virginia Tech expected to sign all of their current commits tomorrow. Additionally, we're expecting a trio of Virginia Tech targets to sign with their future school tomorrow.

With that said, here's our predictions for the three Tech targets expected to make a commitment and sign tomorrow.

4* DE Alec Bryant

Bryant surprised many when he took an official visit to Virginia Tech this past weekend and now, the Hokies look like the favorites for the four-star defensive lineman from Texas.

Bryant had received lots of interest from across the country after decommitting from LSU including an offer from USC. At that time, Bryant seemed likely to wait till February, but the Hokies made him a priority, landed an official visit, and now will be hoping to land his commitment tomorrow as the clear favorite.

Now there is always a chance that Bryant ends up delaying his decision last minute to consider other options with schools like USC likely trying to push for that at the last minute given how Bryant hasn't visited the Trojans. If the Hokies can gain his signature tomorrow, it would be a national statement that the Hokies have refound their footing on the recruiting trail and have done so far away from their traditional recruiting territory.

Currently, I expect the Hokies will land the signature of Alec Bryant tomorrow, but Signing Day can always have surprises both in unexpected choices or delayed decisions.

Prediction: Virginia Tech

12/17 Update: Robert Wooten has committed to Virginia Tech.

3* DE Robert Wooten

Robert Wooten's interest in Virginia Tech was never dependent on whether Tech hired Barry Odom with that showing when Wooten took an official to Blacksburg this past weekend.

Going in to his visit, Wooten told us that he was down to Virginia Tech and SMU with the Hokies impressing him on his visit. Since leaving campus, Wooten's social media activity has looked more like that you would expect of a commit rather than the uncommitted recruit that Wooten currently is.

Landing Wooten along with the aforementioned Alec Bryant would be a major coup for the defensive line that already has Justin Beadles and Derrell Bailey Jr committed.

More importantly, landing the signatures of players the caliber of Bryant and Wooten with all their Power 5 interest would give complete legitimacy to the #TX2VT movement that already made a big statement this fall with 2021 four-star QB Dematrius Davis committing to Tech.

At this point, I would be extremely surprised if Wooten didn't end up signing with Virginia Tech.

Prediction: Virginia Tech

3* TE Wilfried Pene

Pene is the lone offensive target expected to sign tomorrow with the Hokies entering as the clear favorites for his signature.

Tech is the lone Power 5 offer for Pene though schools like Michigan, Pittsburgh, Michigan State, and Maryland have shown interest in him. Despite that, Pene is expected to sign tomorrow with the Hokies making a statement this weekend with a "great visit."

Additionally, Pene told us that he likes the coaches a lot at Tech and that he saw the facilities and campus as "nice." Overall, Pene's official visit appeared to go as well as Tech could have hoped for with their late TE offer.

The Hokies currently don't have a tight end in their class with Pene adding some depth. More importantly, Tech already has a very good situation at tight end that would give the Hokies plenty of time to develop Pene before needing him in a major role in their offense. Given Pene's relative newness to football, that could be extremely valuable.

As long as Pene signs tomorrow as seems most likely, expect it to be with the Hokies.
