With the 2024 college football regular season over and the 2024-25 transfer portal cycle upon us, it feels appropriate to look back at Virginia Tech's 2024 transfer portal class and re-rank them. In evaluating this class, I am going to factor in both what they've done this year and their outlook past this season, with younger players getting a little benefit for their upside shown over older, one-year rental additions.
I'll note that JUCO DT addition Kemari Coepland is not included in this group, as JUCO recruits continue to fall into the traditional recruiting category with high school recruits. Copeland would likely slot in sixth among what would be eight additions if he were included, with the potential to climb higher given his significant potential but being held back for now due to the injury that he suffered in September.
So with that said, let's jump into my re-ranking.
7. DL Khurtiss Perry
Alabama transfer DL Khurtiss Perry didn't play a single snap for the Hokies this season and was basically AWOL. He was a risky addition, having not come close to breaking through the two-deep at Alabama, but the four-star, top 100 recruit pedigree made it somewhat reasonable to see why the risk was worth taking here.
That risk hasn't paid off so far and some comments from Brent Pry during the season suggested that Perry didn't exactly fit in great early on in his time in Blacksburg. Personally, I'm just not seeing this transfer working out for either party and feel like another transfer may be inevitable, even if that may be a year out. This could look different at the end of 2025 but for now, this looks like a whiff for the Hokies.
6. OL Montvaious Cunningham
For the second straight year, Virginia Tech missed on their offensive line transfer portal addition as Cunningham wasn't able to break into the Hokies' offensive line rotation.
