Sam Brumfield wasn't the highest-profile transfer addition of the offseason for Virginia Tech, but the 2023 All-Conference USA linebacker may be the Hokies' most important transfer addition.
Tech's defense lacked a true mike linebacker and their defensive issues stopping the run last season reflected that as run fit issues became one of the top talking points. Insert a true inside linebacker in Brumfield who from the moment he chose Virginia Tech could at least be penciled in as the starter at mike LB.
While it wasn't handed to him immediately, all signs are that Brumfield will be the mike LB with Jaden Keller looking like the possible leader over Keli Lawson and others in one of the few starting battles of this fall camp.
It didn't happen immediately for Brumfield though, as he had an adjustment period when he arrived this spring due largely to learning a new defense. However, things have slowed down for Brumfield as he's learned the defense, having him more than confident that he'll be ready to lead the Hokies' defense as the starting mike LB.
"To be quite honest with you, it's kind of slowed down for me. I came in the spring, and I wouldn't necessarily say it was a learning curve, but things were kind of coming at me fast. But me going through the spring really helped me out a lot. Right here in the summer, everything has slowed down for me. I feel a lot more confident and everything is happening so fast for me and I know what's going on around me," Brumfield said.
