Virginia Tech's first big recruiting weekend of the summer (June 7-9) continues to prove fruitful as the Hokies have landed a commitment from three-star QB/ATH AJ Brand out of Columbia, SC.
Brand chose the Hokies over fellow finalist South Carolina along with other offers from Oregon State, Charlotte, Miami (OH), and more. He is the first commit from the state of South Carolina this cycle and the second quarterback commit along with three-star Kelden Ryan out of Texas.
Brand had an impressive junior season during which he threw for 2,932 passing yards, 45 touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 72.3% completion rate while running for 1,113 yards, 17 touchdowns, and an average of 13.3 yards per carry. He did this playing for one of the premier programs in the state of South Carolina in Irmo HS.
He absolutely fits the dual-threat mold that the Hokies want in their quarterbacks and has proven at the high school ranks that he is dynamic as a passer and a runner. Another big positive with Brand as well is the fact that he seems to do a great job of protecting the football with only two interceptions last season. He also has been recruited as an athlete by other schools so if quarterback doesn't work out, they could move him to a different position.
Tyler Bowen offered him earlier this spring with the Hokies turning on the heat since then and beating out the hometown Gamecocks for his commitment in a very nice recruiting victory for Tech.
With Brand on board, the Hokies are done at quarterback this cycle with four-star Malik Washington trending towards other options including UCF, Maryland, and Syracuse.
