Transfer portal recruiting season has entered full swing with Virginia Tech looking to land talented players on both sides of the ball. That includes the secondary with the Hokies looking at adding a little more talent into an intriguing group with Northern Illinois DB Dillon Thomas among those who have received interest from Tech.
"I’ve been talking to Indiana, Georgia Tech, VT, and Florida in terms of bigger schools," Thomas told us.
Cornerbacks coach Derek Jones has been the primary contact person for Thomas who has some background at safety but is considered a cornerback first. Thomas told us that his conversations with Jones, which have been as recent as the past few days, have been "solid" so far.
Thomas also expects that the clarity of Tech's interest should increase here in the coming days especially as Jones gets more settled in at Tech after finishing out his coaching tenure at Texas Tech.
There's no doubt that Thomas is a rising, talented player who made three starts in 2019 before starting all six games in 2020. He took the next steps forward with a big 2021 where he had 62 tackles including 5.5 for loss with 3 sacks, 5 QB hurries, 3 pass breakups, and a big interception in the MAC Championship victory for NIU.
Looking ahead, Thomas told us that he would like to find a new school before the start of the spring semester, but that it's "not mandatory" for that to happen. However, Thomas does have a good idea of what he's looking for in his next school.
"A good culture of football as well as a good location. Preferably have a good history of sending guys to the next level or at least the opportunity too," Thomas said.
Keep an eye on Dillon Thomas as Brent Pry and his staff look to add some talent from the transfer portal to their first Virginia Tech team.
