Virginia Tech is officially bowl eligible, and following Saturday's 20-16 upset victory over Clemson, the Hokies' postseason outlook has taken another significant step forward.
With the victory, Virginia Tech improved to 6-2 in James Franklin's first season, securing bowl eligibility with four regular-season games remaining. The Hokies also snapped a seven-game losing streak against Clemson, earning their first victory over the Tigers since 2007.
Now, the question is no longer whether Virginia Tech will reach the postseason, but how prestigious its bowl destination might be.
The latest projections from ESPN, CBS Sports and Athlon Sports have the Hokies heading to two different destinations, with three of the four predictions placing Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl.
Latest Virginia Tech Bowl Projections
| Outlet | Bowl | Opponent |
|---|---|---|
| ESPN — Kyle Bonagura | Sun Bowl | Arizona |
| ESPN — Mark Schlabach | Gator Bowl | Tennessee |
| CBS Sports — Brad Crawford | Gator Bowl | South Carolina |
| Athlon Sports — Steven Lassan | Gator Bowl | Florida |
CBS Sports: Gator Bowl vs. South Carolina
CBS Sports' Brad Crawford projects Virginia Tech to face South Carolina in the Gator Bowl on Dec. 30 in Jacksonville, Florida.
The potential matchup would feature one of the more intriguing storylines of bowl season, with former Virginia Tech assistant Shane Beamer facing the program his father, Frank Beamer, built into a national powerhouse.
It would also give the Hokies an opportunity to avenge their 2025 season-opening loss to the Gamecocks.
South Carolina has experienced a resurgence in recent weeks, including a victory over 11th ranked Tennessee, making a postseason meeting between the two programs an appealing possibility.
Athlon Sports: Gator Bowl vs. Florida
Athlon Sports' Steven Lassan also projects Virginia Tech to the Gator Bowl, although his prediction features a matchup against Florida.
The projection represents a significant improvement from previous weeks, when Lassan consistently placed Virginia Tech in the Sun Bowl against Arizona.
A meeting with Florida would provide another opportunity for the Hokies to measure their progress against an SEC opponent, while potentially closing Franklin's first season with a statement victory.
ESPN: Two Different Destinations
ESPN's Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach remain split on Virginia Tech's postseason destination.
Bonagura continues to project the Hokies to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, where they would face Arizona on Dec. 31.
Schlabach, however, has Virginia Tech heading to Jacksonville to face Tennessee in the Gator Bowl on Dec. 30.
Schlabach's prediction remains unchanged from last week, while Bonagura's projection maintains the same Sun Bowl matchup that has appeared throughout much of the season.
Where Virginia Tech Stands
With three of the four national projections pointing toward Jacksonville, the Gator Bowl has emerged as Virginia Tech's most likely postseason destination entering the bye week.
The Hokies still have four regular-season games remaining, including road trips to SMU and Miami and home matchups against Stanford and Virginia.
An 8-4 finish would represent substantial progress in Franklin's first season, while nine or more victories could strengthen Virginia Tech's case for one of the ACC's premier non-playoff bowl destinations.
For now, the Gator Bowl appears to be the consensus favorite, potentially setting up an intriguing SEC matchup to close out the 2026 season.
