Virginia Tech CB DJ Harvey Enters the Transfer Portal

DJ Harvey 2022 Spring Game From VT

With the FBS transfer portal entry window for non-grad transfers opening next Monday, many players are beginning to declare their intentions to enter the transfer portal. Virginia Tech has had their first transfer portal entry of the offseason as CB DJ Harvey announced his intentions to enter the portal.

Harvey leaves Virginia Tech after 2 seasons in Blacksburg during which he redshirted in 2021 after playing in 4 games before becoming a backup cornerback and fairly often used nickelback for the Hokies this season. During the 2022 season, he has 6 5ackles including 1 for loss plus a forced fumble and a pass breakup. He also returned 9 punts for 14 yards this season after starting out as the punt returner before Tucker Holloway took over just after mid-season.

This is definitely a disappointing loss for the Hokies as Harvey was poised to be in the two-deep at CB next season. With Jalen Stroman likely replacing Chamarri Conner, he also was the favorite to slide into the #1 nickelback spot after being the backup there this season. He also had the potential for a clear path to being a starter in 2024 given that Armani Chatman only has a COVID year left while Dorian Strong is one healthy, good season away from potentially being a well-regarded NFL prospect.

While his loss is disappointing, cornerback might be the deepest spot on the Hokies' roster with a quality two-deep of Strong, Mansoor Delane, Chatman, and Cam Johnson along with a very talented freshman class that can backfill this room further.

Meanwhile, Harvey has shown he has what it takes to play at the Power 5 level and it wouldn't be surprising to see him receive loads of offers especially from his California roots and the western half of the country as a whole.

We will have more as this story develops.
