According to multiple reports around midnight Monday morning from 247 Sports and On3, Virginia Tech is expected to land a commitment from Penn State QB Ethan Grunkemeyer.

Grunkemeyer would be the third of four transfer commitments so far for the Hokies along with Penn State DL Daniel Jennings, Penn State TE Matt Henderson, and Louisiana RB Bill Davis. He started the final seven games for the Nittany Lions as a redshirt freshman and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

It is important to note that Grunkemeyer hasn't officially announced his commitment as of noon on Monday, January 5th; but it would be very surprising if he didn't.

He finished the season well for Penn State, throwing for 1,339 yards with eight touchdown, four interceptions, and a 69.1% completion rate while running for one touchdown and 59 yards on 24 non-sack carries. He earned a 68.2 grade from PFF with his three final games against Nebraska, Rutgers, and Clemson receiving his highest PFF grades.

Grunkemeyer is more of an old-school, pocket passer who has shown tons of potential and proven himself against a solid Big 10 schedule plus a decent Clemson team in a bowl game. One of the most impressive things about his performance was the fact that he was able to push the ball down the field and was effective in the mid-range. He was 23-37 (62.2%) on passes that travelled 10-19 air yards down the field for 564 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. That's an encouraging sign of the significant upside that Grunkemeyer has as a passer.

With Grunkemeyer on board, it remains to be seen if VT will continuing battling Georgia Tech, Stanford, and others for Missouri starting QB Beau Pribula. If they do not, I do wonder if VT looks for an experienced, lower-level starting QB transfer to be Grunkemeyer's backup similar to Ole Miss did bringing in Trinidad Chambliss from DII Ferris State last season not knowing that Chambliss would take the starting job early in the season and not look back.
