The technological revolution has arrived in college football for 2024.
Two of the biggest changes in college football for this upcoming season is the fact that all teams are allowed to use helmet communication for offensive coordinators and quarterbacks to communicate plays between each other, and one or two defensive players to do the same with defensive coordinators along with teams getting to use tablets with replays on the sideline to coach up players and address mistakes more directly.
Let’s start with the helmet communication. The push for this began after sign-stealing was one of the biggest off-the-field storylines during the 2023 season, with this type of technology now being reasonably affordable for all programs across the country. Bowl season presented a chance for several teams to do a test run of it, with the success of that leading to the formal rule change.
With this change official, there is plenty of excitement around what this can do to benefit both offenses and defenses, and cut down on mistakes. Virginia Tech’s star QB Kyron Drones is personally excited about the helmet communication and how it’ll give him more time to evaluate the defense pre-snap.
