Check out the latest Virginia Tech football recruiting notes including updates on a talented commit, an offensive tackle Tech is monitoring in the 2021 class, and more.
3* WR Tray Curry
Tray Curry surprised many people when he committed to Virginia Tech earlier this summer with many wondering or even doubting whether he would stick with his commitment given how out of the blue it was.
So far, signs are good as a source well-connected in the Tennessee recruiting scene has told us that he sees him "sticking" with VT especially if the Hokies continue to stick with him as primarily an outside WR rather than a hybrid TE as some schools may be looking at him at.
There's no doubt that Curry fits the mold of the bigger, outside receiver that can go up and win lots of 50-50 balls that Tech likes to have as proven by Damon Hazelton. Tech also is continuing to recruit future jumbo WRs as WRs rather than TEs like 2022 four-star Jaleel Skinner, another sign that Tech is committed to Curry as an outside WR.
For now, there continue to be no signs of Tray Curry wavering in his commitment to the Hokies.
3* OT Ryan O'Hair
Three-star OT Ryan O'Hair appears to be on the verge of having his recruitment take off with Virginia Tech recruiting assistant Beau Davidson reaching out to him.
O'Hair told us that it was a "very nice conversation" that he had with Davidson having this to say about what Davidson's specific message was for him.
"That they liked what they saw on my film from this past Friday and that I look much improved over last season. Said they want to see the film from my game this coming Friday," O'Hair said.
The Hokies are far from the only team showing interest as he is also hearing from Penn State, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Purdue, Marshall, Miami (OH), and others with Southeastern Louisiana offering him.
Much of that is due to O'Hair's significant physical development as he has grown from 6'6'' and 220 pounds to 6'8'' and 290 pounds since his junior season. That type of plus size has unsurprisingly sparked lots of interest in the McDonald, Pennsylvania recruit who is still seeing his recruitment take off despite this unique recruiting cycle.
O'Hair appears to be close to seeing his recruitment take off in a major way with the Hokies showing significant interest.
2022 3* DB/LB Dylan Dixson
Virginia Tech has sent out a few new offers early this month including one to 2022 three-star DB/LB Dylan Dixson.
#AGTG After a long talk with @CoachGouveia I am Blessed to receive an offer from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University #GoHokies @OilerRecruiting @TDavis_Coach @CoachTullos @CoachBigalo @WillieLyles pic.twitter.com/06R9XDfGui
— Dylan Dixson ⑦ (@dixson_dylan) September 3, 2020
Dixson told us that his initial reaction to receiving an offer from assistant Jeron Gouveia-Winslow was "that it was crazy that someone way in Virginia knew who I was." His conversation with Gouveia-Winslow was "good" as a whole and included discussions about things from fishing to how Tech's defense is run.
This offer wasn't out of the blue as Dixson told us that he had been hearing from VT for "three days straight" prior to Tech extending an offer to him.
Dixson is an intriguing hybrid prospect who Tech has offered as a safety and is evaluated by Rivals and ESPN as such while 247 Sports has him evaluated as an outside linebacker. He had a productive sophomore season spending a lot of time in the box and finishing with 7 sacks plus a few more tackles for loss.
This offer to Dixson is also another example of how Tech plans to continue to spot recruiting in the state of Texas with 4 commits in the 2020 and 2021 cycles. His versatility and productivity in the box makes him a potentially good fit in Tech's defense as a nickelback/whip linebacker.
Keep an eye on Dylan Dixson as a 2022 recruit to watch especially due to his potential fit in Tech's defense.
