Virginia Tech Hires Florida State's Chris Marve as Defensive Coordinator

Defense 5

Brent Pry has his defensive coordinator as Virginia Tech has announced the hiring of Florida State LBs coach/defensive run game coordinator Chris Marve as the next defensive coordinator.

Marve comes to Blacksburg after two seasons in that role at Florida State. Prior to that, Marve spent a year at Mississippi State with a stint in various roles from 2014-2018 at his alma mater Vanderbilt. He was also a standout linebacker for the Commodores from 2007-2011 which includes the first of three seasons for Brent Pry at Vandy.

Pry may not have coached with Marve previously, but Marve has played in a Pry defense which makes him a fit on multiple fronts in terms of the system Pry wants to implement defensively. He also is considered a rising star by many in the industry having earned spots on multiple 40 under 40 and 30 under 30 lists in recent years.

One thing that there may be some questions about is his recruiting ability though his youth at 32 makes that something that can continue to grow. Additionally, Marve is now the youngest defensive coordinator in the ACC though Pry will likely be heavily involved while Marve also had veteran assistants on the defensive side of the ball to lean on some as well with J.C. Price, Derek Jones, and Shawn Quinn who all have had coordinator or head coach roles in the past.
